Readers,
Here is the latest edition of The Surf Report! We are combining the months of February and March because we have been busy with tutorial after school and haven’t had much time to meet. For this edition, we were excited to interview all of the safety patrols about their trip to Washington DC. They seemed to have a great time and they learned a lot, too! We also sat down and interviewed Ms. Redmond and Ms. Bradley and the students who are in the club Teachers of Tomorrow. It was nice to learn about what the students in this club are doing. Our next edition will be after spring break!

Sincerely,
Donovan, Mitch, Daisy, Rubi, Francisco, Yessenia, Caleb, Yuna,  and Angelina

This month we met with all of the safety patrols after their trip to Washington DC. We learned that they took a train there and stayed in hotels. They learned a lot about the history of our county and had fun, too!

What was your favorite monument?
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was cool because it tells us about a soldier who died that we didn’t know their name but we honor them. Abraham Lincoln Memorial because Lincoln went through so many things to stop slavery. We liked the quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” by Martin Luther King, Jr.

What was your favorite part of the trip?
We liked the hotels, we had our own TVs and comfortable beds. But we really liked the Changing of the Guards and the Smithsonian. We also got to buy stuff at the gift shops.

What was it like riding the train?
Riding the train was bumpy. Marwin kept asking for cookies from everyone. Mr. Forman had extra cookies but Marwin didn’t know and didn’t ask him. Too bad!

Was it cold in Washington DC?
Yes!!! It was 19 degrees. We could see our breath but we didn’t see any snow. We wish we would have been able to see snow.

What was the funniest part of the trip?
Isabella kept on losing her phone! Many times. Like more than 16 times. She also dropped it and the battery was coming out. One time she dropped it at the security and everyone turned and looked. It was embarrassing. We even found her phone in someone’s backpack! Isabella forgot she had put it there because she didn’t have enough room in her backpack.
Oscar is allergic to seafood but he ate popcorn shrimp because he said it tasted good. Mr. Forman had to take him to the doctor.
We also thought it was funny when Ms. Steinburg did Musicly and the flash went off in  Mr. Forman’s eyes and he was surprised.

Did you like the trip?
We did because we learned about history and we got to buy stuff.

Was there good food?
Yes!!!! We love to eat at Golden Corral but it was annoying to go to the same place. Except for Mr. Forman who really, really, really loves to eat at Golden Corral.

What did you learn on the trip?
We learned about the quotes from Martin Luther King, Jr. We saw George Washington’s house and we learned about the Civil War. We saw the Lincoln Memorial and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument.

We asked the teachers: Did you like the trip?

YES!!! We had fun. We made lots of memories and we had lots of laughs. We had fun with Isabella’s phone and Eileen’s Panda Hat and Marwin asking for cookies. We also liked how the students were able to learn more about the history of our county and see monuments of people we have learned about. We liked how excited the students were to learn more and how respectful they were at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

By: Mitch, Francisco, and Daisy
We are interested in what the other clubs at South Grade are doing and we thought you would, too. Enjoy learning about this club put together by Ms. Redmond and Ms. Bradley for our students who want to be teachers when they get older.

What do the students do in the club?
Our students are going into classrooms to help the teachers. They are getting to experience what it is like to teach. They are reading to students and helping them with their math skills. They have been working in the Kindergarten rooms. The students have also been leveling books for students to have just right books.

Why did you start the club?
There are so many students want to be teachers. This club gives them the opportunity to see what teaching is like.

Have you ever taught a grade?
Ms. Bradley said she has taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. She loved it! Ms. Redmond taught 4th grade and even did a little bit of time with high school students. They both now help with small groups and love teaching.

What is your favorite subject?
Both Ms. Redmond and Ms. Bradley said they love reading the best. Ms. Redmond likes math too but she likes to see the progress the students make. She also said it is the most important subject because reading is in everything you do. Even math. Ms. Bradley likes reading to find out new information and reading makes her happy.

How long have you been teaching?
Ms. Redmond has been teaching for 42 years! But South Grade is her favorite school she has ever taught at.
Ms. Bradley has been teaching for 17 years. She loves teaching because she likes when she can make a student smile.

Do you have any pets?
Ms. Redmond had a dog who passed away after 16 years. She now has four cats she adopted. One of the cats was a kitten who was born outside the media center window of her old school.  Once the kittens were all old enough, different teachers adopted a kitten and Ms. Redmond was one of them. She named the kitten Lilly.
Ms. Bradley has two dogs.

WE ALSO INTERVIEWD A FEW STUDENTS IN THE CLUB: Yessenia, Eva, Ashley, Araceli

What do you do in your club?
We meet in the afternoon and we talk about what we are going to do in the classroom. Then, we go into classrooms to help the teachers and students.

What do you want to teach?
Some of us want to teach Kindergarten, 3rd, 4th, 5th and Eva wants to teach college students.

Which teachers do you help at South Grade?
We go into different classrooms. T. Perez, Ms. Perez, and Ms. Brockhoff.

What is your favorite subject?
Two of us like Math and two of us like Reading.

What is it like working in the classroom as a teacher?
Some of the students kept calling for Ashley over and over to come read to them! It was funny!

Why do you want to be a teacher?

We get to help kids and be smart.
